Telegram channel vs group: the difference and when to use each

Telegram channel vs group: who can post, how many people fit and when to use each, read from Telegram's own pages with dates.

A Telegram channel is a broadcast: only admins post, and it can have an unlimited number of subscribers. A Telegram group is a chat: members can write in it, and it can hold up to 200,000 people. A channel can add a discussion group, and subscribers comment on its posts, according to Telegram’s own pages.

This guide takes each difference from Telegram’s own pages. It ends with a plain answer: should you create a group or a channel? We read every Telegram page cited here on 30 September 2026. Three of them carry no publication or update date. Two, Group Chats on Telegram and Telegram Channels, carry a publication date of 29 January 2018 in their metadata, so the facts are as of our reading.

What is the difference between a channel and a group on Telegram?

Telegram’s FAQ answers this in two short paragraphs. Groups, it says, are “ideal for sharing stuff with friends and family or collaboration in small teams”, but can grow into communities of up to 200,000 members. Channels are “a tool for broadcasting messages to large audiences”, and a channel can have an unlimited number of subscribers.

The rest of the difference follows from who speaks. In a channel, only admins have the right to post. By default, each post shows the channel’s name and photo instead of the person who wrote it. The owner can turn on admin signatures, which show the admin’s screen name but no link to their profile. In a group, members can write too, and their messages normally show who wrote them. Members’ writing can be switched off: the FAQ describes a setting that stops them from sending messages, so that only the admins chat while everyone else watches.

Other differences are smaller. Each post in a channel has a view counter, and views of forwarded copies count toward it. A channel’s subscriber list is visible only to its owner and admins, and subscribers cannot see who else has signed up. A group can be split into topics, each with its own chat history, shared media and notification settings.

How many people can join a Telegram group or channel?

A Telegram group can have up to 200,000 members, according to the FAQ and to the page on group chats. Telegram’s developer documentation calls a group of that size a supergroup. A channel can have an unlimited number of subscribers, according to the FAQ, the Channels FAQ and Telegram Channels. The page on group chats adds a hint for very large communities: “If you’re doing something massively popular, consider creating a channel.”

Can people comment in a Telegram channel?

Yes, once the channel has a discussion group. You add one from the channel info page. Subscribers then see a comment button for each post, the comments appear in a thread under the post, and they also land in the discussion group. Telegram says this makes it easier for admins to keep the conversation civil.

A channel owner can also turn on direct messages. Subscribers can then write to the owner privately, without the owner having to share a personal account.

Who can find a Telegram channel or group, and who can join?

According to Telegram’s Channels FAQ, a public channel has a username, and anyone can find it in Telegram search and join. A private channel needs an invite link, or the owner adding you. The same FAQ says that a new subscriber can see the entire message history of a channel. The Telegram Channels page adds that a new channel starts as private, and that the owner can make it public. It also says that the contents of a public channel can be seen on the web without a Telegram account.

A group can be public too. It gets a short link, and anybody can view the group’s entire chat history and join to post messages. A group can also be shared with an invite link: anyone who has Telegram installed can join by following it, and a revoked link stops working immediately.

Should I create a Telegram group or channel?

Start from who should speak.

  • Create a channel when you mostly announce to many people and want the feed to stay yours: news, schedules, updates. Only admins post, posts show the channel’s name, and the owner can go live to an unlimited number of viewers.
  • Create a group when members need to talk to each other: questions, replies, mentions, topics, and a voice chat that members join when they want. A group holds up to 200,000 people.
  • Create both when you want announcements and conversation side by side. Give the channel a discussion group, and the comments under each post land there.

If you are unsure, ask three questions. Who should be able to post? How many people do you expect? Should announcements and conversation share one place?

Frequently asked questions

Can members post in a Telegram channel?

Not on their own: only admins have the right to post in a channel. Subscribers can comment when the channel has a discussion group.

How many members can a Telegram group have?

Up to 200,000, according to Telegram’s FAQ and its page on group chats.

Can a Telegram channel and a group be linked?

Yes. A channel can have a discussion group, which you add from the channel info page. Comments on channel posts then appear in the group.

Is a channel or a group better for a community?

It depends on who should speak. A channel suits announcements to many people, a group suits conversation, and the two can be linked with a discussion group.

The short version

A channel is for announcing to as many people as you like, and only admins post. A group is for conversation, up to 200,000 members. Link a discussion group to a channel when you want both. Money and access are a different question. For what Telegram and Groupanda each charge, and where Telegram is the better choice, read the comparison of a paid Telegram group and Groupanda.
