What is the WhatsApp community limit? Members, groups and admins

WhatsApp's Help Center caps a group at 1,024 members and a community at 2,000 members in total, across up to 100 groups. Here is what each limit means.

The WhatsApp community limit is 2,000 members in total, counting everyone in the community’s groups and its announcement group, according to WhatsApp’s Help Center. A community holds up to 100 groups, and each group holds up to 1,024 members. When a community or one of its groups is full, nobody new can join until a place frees up.

This guide takes each limit from WhatsApp’s own pages, including the places where those pages disagree with numbers other sites repeat. It ends with the honest part: when WhatsApp is the right tool for a group, and what changes when a club outgrows it. We read every WhatsApp page cited here on 27 September 2026. Help Center articles carry no date, so the numbers are as of that day.

Limit Number WhatsApp page
Members in a group 1,024 How to create and invite into a group
Groups in a community 100 How to create a community
Members in a community, in total 2,000, including the announcement group How to create a community
Members in a community’s general chat 1,024 About general chat for communities

What is the WhatsApp group limit?

A WhatsApp group holds up to 1,024 members. That is the number on WhatsApp’s Help Center pages for creating a group and for adding members. One page, on joining a group inside a community, adds a detail: 1,024 members, or 1,025 counting the person who created the group. The other pages give 1,024 without that note, so 1,024 is the number to plan around.

So yes, WhatsApp groups have a limit, and it has grown in steps. In March 2022, the Help Center still said a group could have up to 256 participants. We read that in an archived copy of the page captured on 25 March 2022, and the page itself carries no date. On 5 May 2022, WhatsApp’s blog announced a gradual rollout of groups of up to 512 people. On 3 November 2022, the day it started rolling out Communities, it announced groups of up to 1,024.

Why 256, then 512, then 1,024? Each step doubled the limit, but WhatsApp has not published a reason for any of these numbers on the pages we read. What it did say, in May 2022, is that adding more people to a chat was one of the top requests it had consistently received.

In groups, the number 256 still matters in one place. When a group has more than 256 members, the setting that lets members edit the group’s name, icon and description defaults to admins only.

Is the WhatsApp community limit 2,000 or 5,000?

WhatsApp’s own answer today is 2,000. The Help Center page on creating a community says you can have up to 2,000 members in new and existing communities. The same page says this limit includes the members of the community’s groups and of its announcement group, and that a community holds up to 100 groups. When the community is full, nobody new can be added, and a person who could not be added has to wait until someone leaves.

Some sites in today’s search results still say 5,000, and that number has a history on WhatsApp’s own page. An archived copy of the same Help Center page was captured on 25 March 2023. In it, WhatsApp said a community could have up to 50 groups in addition to the announcement group. That copy also said the announcement group could take up to 5,000 members. In the same copy, a note said that “at this time” only 2,000 members could be added, and that WhatsApp was working on it. A copy captured on 1 October 2023 already said 100 groups and still described 2,000 as the limit at that time. Today the page gives 2,000 and does not mention 5,000.

The page is silent on two things. It does not say whether a person who is in two of the community’s groups counts once or twice toward the 2,000. It also does not say whether the announcement group counts toward the 100 groups.

Each group inside a community is a normal group with the same 1,024 limit. So is the community’s general chat, a group that new members can choose to join. The Help Center adds one more detail. A community cannot currently be created in the WhatsApp Business app, although business accounts can take part in communities they already belong to.

Who can post in a WhatsApp community’s announcement group?

Only community admins can send announcements. Everyone in the community is added to the announcement group, and you cannot leave it without leaving the community. Members can reply to announcements and react to them. WhatsApp’s page for admins says replies cannot be turned off, and admins can delete or report a member’s reply.

A normal group can work the same way. Group admins can turn off Send new messages for members, and then only admins can post.

WhatsApp’s two announcement pages disagree on one detail. The page for members says everyone can see the total number of members in the announcement group. The page for admins says only the admin can see that number. We could not tell from WhatsApp’s pages which one is current.

How many admins can a WhatsApp group or community have?

A group can have an unlimited number of admins, and any admin can make another member an admin. The person who created a group cannot be removed and stays an admin unless they leave the group.

A community can have up to 20 admins, and only a community admin can make someone else one. The person who created the community stays an admin unless they deactivate the community.

What happens when a WhatsApp group is full?

Nobody new gets in until a place frees up. WhatsApp’s pages describe this from four sides:

  • Adding people. When you add a contact to several groups at once, a group that is full appears grayed out.
  • Groups in a community. If a group is full, you can ask to join it when a member leaves or is removed.
  • The community itself. At 2,000 members, you cannot add anyone new, and a person who could not be added waits until someone leaves.
  • General chat. At 1,024 members, new community members cannot join it until someone leaves or is removed.

None of the pages we read describes a waiting list. They say only that whoever missed out waits until a place frees up.

Will WhatsApp increase the group limit?

Nothing on the WhatsApp pages we read says it will. The limit went from 256 to 1,024 within 2022, and the 1,024 announced in November 2022 is still the number in the Help Center today. WhatsApp’s latest blog post about group chats, published on 4 August 2026, added better polls, @all mentions and a way to create a group from an existing one. It did not mention the limit.

Is WhatsApp good for group chats?

Yes, and for many groups it is the right choice, because everyone already has it. WhatsApp also offers polls and events in groups, and group video calls.

WhatsApp describes its own focus the same way. When it announced Communities in April 2022, it wrote that other apps were building chats for hundreds of thousands of people. WhatsApp, it said, was choosing to focus on “the groups that are part of our daily lives.”

It starts to fit less well when one of these becomes true:

  • You are close to a limit. A group of 1,024 or a community of 2,000 is a hard stop, and the people who miss out wait.
  • Topics run into each other. A WhatsApp group is one chat. Replies to one message can be opened as a chain, but a separate topic still means a separate group, and members join each group separately.
  • You want announcements without replies. In a community, members can always reply to announcements. Admins can delete replies but cannot switch them off.
  • Members pay fees. None of the WhatsApp group pages we read links a fee to membership. Someone matches payments to names, and a group admin removes each member who stopped paying.

None of these makes WhatsApp a bad tool. They are signs that a group has turned into an organization with a structure.

What changes when a club moves from WhatsApp to a workspace with channels?

A workspace with channels keeps one group and gives each topic its own channel inside it. Groupanda works this way, and our page on Groupanda as a club communication app covers the club side in detail. Here is what changes, in Groupanda’s terms:

  • No member cap to plan around. Groupanda sets no member limit when people join a group, and no limit on the number of channels.
  • Channels instead of separate groups. Every new group starts with five channels: General, Announcements and three topic channels based on the group’s category. You add, rename, reorder and delete channels. A member who joins the group can read every channel that is open to all members.
  • A read-only announcements channel. Only you post in Announcements, and you can let your admins post there too. In each channel, you choose who can post: you, you and your admins, or everyone.
  • Owner, admins and members. Admins can ban and mute members and delete messages. A ban ends the membership at once and stops the person from rejoining.
  • Control over who joins. Joining can be open, by invitation through the group’s invite link, or after you approve each request.
  • Fees that open channels. If your club collects a membership fee, you can add up to 5 plans side by side. Each plan is a monthly subscription or a one-time payment with no renewal date, and it opens the channels you assign to it. Channels open to every member stay free.
  • Past decisions stay findable. Groupanda does not delete messages or files automatically. A search within a channel covers that channel’s whole history.

Members buy a plan in the browser; the mobile apps send them there. For a monthly subscription, access ends when the paid period runs out. Creating a group is free and needs no card, and the pricing page explains the fee on paid plans.

Moving takes some effort, and it is fair to say so. Every member creates a Groupanda account with an email address, a password, a nickname and a phone number. Then they join with the group’s invite link, which looks like app.groupanda.com/your-group. Groupanda runs on the web, on iOS and on Android. There is no desktop app, so on a computer members use the browser.

Groupanda also has no polls, no events and no voice or video calls. If your club relies on those, weigh that before you move.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum number of members in a WhatsApp group?

1,024, according to WhatsApp’s Help Center on 27 September 2026. One Help Center page adds that this is 1,025 counting the person who created the group.

Can a WhatsApp community have 5,000 members?

Not according to WhatsApp’s Help Center today. It gives 2,000 members in total, including the community’s groups and its announcement group. An archived 2023 version of the same page mentioned 5,000 for the announcement group, next to a note that only 2,000 could be added at that time.

Why is the WhatsApp group limit 256?

It is not any more. The Help Center said 256 in March 2022. WhatsApp then announced groups of up to 512 in May 2022 and up to 1,024 in November 2022, and the pages we read give no reason for these numbers.

How many WhatsApp groups can I create in one day?

The Help Center pages we read do not give a number. The page on adding group members says that if you have added too many members to groups, you might need to wait 24 hours before adding more members or creating more groups.

Is WhatsApp good for group chats?

Yes, for many families, teams and small clubs, because everyone already has it. It fits less well once a group nears 1,024 members or a community nears 2,000. It also fits less well when a club needs one place for many topics rather than many separate groups.

The short version

A WhatsApp group holds 1,024 members, and a community holds 2,000 in total across up to 100 groups. The 5,000 you may see elsewhere appeared in a 2023 version of WhatsApp’s own page, next to a note that only 2,000 could be added. When your club starts to feel them, create your group in Groupanda for free and see whether channels fit it better.
